First Person On Scene (FPOS)

FPOS Basic and Intermediate BTEC Level 2 Awards

Qualification Summary:

The Edexcel Level 2 BTEC Award IHCD First Person on Scene (FPOS) qualification is available at Basic and Intermediate levels. It has been designed to equip learners with the skills, knowledge and confidence to help a person in a life threatening situation. Subjects covered include:

  • Scene safety
  • Minimising the risk of infection
  • Patient assessment
  • Basic life support and automated defibrillation (to re-start the heart)
  • Providing initial emergency patient care
  • Being part of a medical response.

FPOS qualifications have been developed with the NHS Ambulance Services and are clinically endorsed by the Faculty of Pre-hospital Care. The FPOS (Intermediate) qualification also meets the Security Industry Authority first aid requirements for Close Protection Licensing. FPOS qualifications may be delivered internationally.

Who are FPOS qualifications designed for?

  • Those who are likely to be first on the scene of an emergency incident when a person's life is in danger
  • Community responders
  • Fire and police personnel
  • Industrial first aiders
  • Those who want to achieve more than Basic First Aid qualifications
  • Close Protection Operatives

What will learners have to do to gain FPOS qualification & certificates?

For both qualifications learners will need to undertake a training course taught by a qualified trainer/assessor and pass a paper-based multi-choice written test and practical assessments. It is also recommended that learners should take a refresher training course in the use of an automated external defibrillator every six months.

Certification and Refresher Training:

Both the Basic and Intermediate FPOS certificates are valid for three years from the date of issue and must be renewed within that period for the qualification to remain valid. Renewal certificates are issued after successful completion of a refresher training course.
